SCOME, the Standing Committee on Medical Education, is a discussion forum for students interested in the different aspects of medical education in the hope of pursuing and achieving its aim. Medical Education should be a concern of every medical student as it shapes not only the quality of future doctors, but also the quality of healthcare.
1- First Aids for All:
From the recent 2015 recommendations of the American Heart Association state that:” Education and training in first aid can be useful to improve morbidity and mortality from injury and illness, and we recommend that it be universally available as evidence shows that education in first aid can increase survival rates, improve recognition of acute illness, and aid symptom resolution”.
The project’s main goal is to raise awareness about the basic first aids to school children and teachers. Additionally, the awareness does not stop here; Awareness of non-medical university students is also a goal. Also through continuous assessment, we are planning to jump to evidence based recommendations to authorities in order to integrate first aids classes in primary and secondary schools.
2- Postgraduate Opportunities -PGO-:
One of the biggest challenging moments for any medical students is the true recognition of the future steps upon graduating from medical school. PGO, is a project that aims to create a national platform of discussion between medical students about postgraduate opportunities available on their ways. It also engages medical students through discussions with professional agencies and official platforms capacitating them with the knowledge and full spectrum of choices open to them after graduating from college.
3- Conjoint Projects:
Believing in the principle of multispectral work, FMSA Fayoum encourages standing committees to join in efforts to tackle certain issues. With different capacity building levels based on the committee’s mission, the project covers a couple of aspects between public health, sexual and reproductive health, human rights and medical education.
4- Towards Better Medical Education - TBME:
In Egypt, medical education level hasn’t been satisfying for decades. Most of the medical schools are going with the traditional discipline-based system using out-of- date curricula and biased methods of assessment. The teaching methods depend mainly on theoretical lectures with minimal levels of clinical exposure of students.
On the other hand, medical students in Egypt don’t play their role in the medical education development process. They lack the knowledge about the other continuously developing medical education systems in the world, and most of them don’t pay much attention to the quality of their education and its accreditation, they are not oriented about their importance. TPME is a project concerns about the medical education and aims to:
1. Improvement of medical education by following the latest methods of education and depending on advanced Curriculum.
2. Building a strong capacity of well-oriented medical students in our faculty about the core medical education aspects.
3. Involving the students in the process of medical education development as a major stakeholder in the process.
